IMPLEMENT- Bleeding Alone

This independent release came out in the second half of 2019, but I’m just getting around to reviewing it, having received a copy early this year. Many metal fans lament the lack of Christian bands playing in the old school/traditional death metal genre. You’re in luck with Implement. The Brazilian band from Recife play a no-frills version of the genre with hints of thrash and grindcore. Hailing from Recife, the band’s debut should appeal to fans of Antidemon, Necromanicider, early Mortification (e.g. self-titled), late Vengeance Rising (e.g. Released Upon the Earth).

I was actually surprised it’s an indie release and not on a label, as the production is surprisingly good. Overall the riffs are very straight-forward. They are going for heaviness and speed, and not technicality, or even sheer brutality. 90% of the time this works well for them, especially when they lock into a groove like on “Red Flag,” or “Great Terror.” The latter starts with an almost grindcore-level intro, but then locks into a thrashy groove that reminds me of early Mortification-style riffs. It is these rhythms that show Implement’s strengths in riffs, opposed to technical brutality.

Occasionally the leads get a little sloppy and could be tightened up a bit. For instance, the title track starts off really strong, but when the fast riffs commence, the timing gets a little off. Kudos to the band for trying to spice things up a bit, but perhaps a little more practice and working with an outside producer could help. Another strong track is the album closer, “Mirror of Illusions,” which begins with a slow and heavy doomy riff before ripping into another death/thrash romp.

This is overall an enjoyable listen. While it’s not the most brutal or technical death metal I’ve ever heard, it did have me headbanging on multiple occasions. (Indie) 3 out of 5 Stars
