REVELATION - Spiritual Wind

Months back I started hearing of the forthcoming 30th anniversary reissue of the Spiritual Wind classic by Revelation and was really excited. This one takes me back to the metal tape indie "demo" days of Christian metal, and this had been one of my favorite releases back when it came out in 1988. They were one of the bands that got away, who many felt deserved a national release, but who never made it.

I recall back in the day, I was so impressed by them I looked them up and used to talk with them on the phone from time to time. This would have been right around the time I had started my own metal mag (The Pendragon). I still have a digitized version of the Spiritual Wind tape to this day. To hear that it was coming in a remastered CD edition, with the inclusion of a three-song 1987 demo that I had never heard, as well as a bonus DVD concert — well that was just an amazing bit of news. This was released at the end of January 2018 on Thrashback Records, and yes, this package lives up to the hype and I am thrilled to have such a higher quality version in my collection now.

The release had a lot of amazing hands involved in the work of bringing this to us. With Eric Hoffman of Reformata Audio & Video doing much of the audio and video transferring, and Rob Colwell of Bombworks Sound doing the mastering, and Scott Waters of No Life 'Til Metal / Ultimatum fame restoring the artwork, the product is top notch, This CD/DVD set comes with a 12-page liner note booklet containing many photos and remarks from the band on various songs, with the CD containing 12 songs:

SPIRITUAL WIND (1988)

Running Scared Johnny Spiritual Wind Young Warrior Children of the City Nights Fortress Stop the Rain Hunting the Devil Good Cause

VISIONS (1987)

Visions You’re Not the Only One Good Cause

The DVD contains "bootleg" type audience recordings, including their six song set at Cornerstone 1989 which sounds great for an audience recording (see clip below). Also featured are clips from earlier shows, to include a few songs not found on the studio recordings (Open Heart, Revelation, and Conquer the Night). The there is the bonus behind the scenes clips, which include practice-room rehearsals, hi-jinks and silliness, and back-stage bits from Cornerstone, including run-ins with Scott Wenzel (Whitecross) and Mick Rowe (Tempest).

BONUS DVD Live at Cornerstone ‘89 Bonus Live Clips: ‘88-’89 Behind the Scenes: ‘88-’90

For those not familiar with this band, here is the historical write-up about them:

Revelation were formed in the mid-80’s in the then small town of Jupiter, Florida, the northern most town within the greater West Palm Beach area. Jupiter was best known for its horse ranches and as the home of actor Burt Reynolds, and five high school friends with a love for Iron Maiden and Judas Priest set out to change all that.

From day one Revelation began writing and rehearsing original music and set out to quickly hone their songwriting beyond the bands jam room by hitting the stage with well known local acts such as Lady Sabre, Intruder, Warinstoch and Eden Rock; as well as national acts such as Messiah Prophet and Barren Cross.

In 1988 the band would enter a popular West Palm Beach studio, Saturn Sound Studios, to record their first demo. Vocalist Mike Roy recalls, “We had no idea what we were doing. We had 4-hours to record and mix everything, I had the flu, I didn’t even know there was a left and right side to the studio headphones! We were schooled that day”. The result of this session was the 3-song demo “Visions”. The tape would go on to garner the band favorable press and a growing fan-base due to the burgeoning tape trading circuit of the time.

Over the course of the next year, the band would continue hitting stages across the State (with chaperones as they were all still in high school) and writing new music. In 1988, armed with and albums worth of material, the band teamed up with local producer Steven Miles to independently record their first album, “Spiritual Wind”.

Revelation would continue to gain momentum over the next few years, including talks with major label Atlantic Records. Eventually in 1991 the band would call it a day with three of the five members moving onto their next chapter as Brother Grimm. ThrashBack Records is pleased to announce the release of this 30th Anniversary Edition. This release also marks the first title in our planned “Florida Metal Archive Series”.
