Undercover was a band that constantly evolved: from punk to goth and hard rock, to the burgeoning alternative sound of the 1990s. Lyrically, the band matured right before their fans’ eyes and ears, moving from the simple and straightforward to wordplay that was filled with subtext, passion, and self-examination.
The roar of that evolution exploded from speakers when Devotion, the band’s sixth full-length studio album was released in 1992. Who could forget the thunderous tremor of “Work It Out,” with Gary Dean Olson’s crushing drums leading in Gym Nicholson’s guitar, Ojo Taylor’s bass, and the commanding vocals of Sim Wilson? Who would not be moved by the closing, elegiac arena-rocker “So Wonderful,” as each band member slips into formation, one by one, to send a farewell on to a loved one?
